Acts on certain olfactory receptor cell types to reduce the activating or attracting effect of odor sources. Insect repellent. Picaridin is an insect repellent that is effective against a range of arthropods, including mosquitoes and ticks.1,2 It shows synergy with the non-pyrethroid insecticide propoxur both in killing and repelling mosquitoes.3 Picaridin and other insect repellents have been shown to act as either agonists or antagonists at insect olfactory receptors.4,5
