Cefpodoxime acid is an oral prodrug that is converted to its active form, cefpodoxime, in the gastrointestinal tract. Cefpodoxime acid is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It has been shown to be effective against Streptococcus pyogenes (group A β-hemolytic streptococci) and other types of streptococci, including Streptococcus pneumoniae. Cefpodoxime acid has been found to have hypoglycemic effects in humans.
