An important inhibitory neurotransmitter. Foods that contain γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) can have an immediate effect of suppressing autonomic nerve activity related to blood pressure increase. Reacts with isothiocyanates to produce thioureas which have antifungal activity. Acts as a GABAA and GABAB receptor agonist.

γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been used in the preparation of GABA–BSA (bovine serum albumin)–GA (glutaraldehyde) conjugate, which is used as a control for GABA immunostaining Also used in the macromolecule suppressed detection of GABA by magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and in the intraintestinal application of GABA in order to increase intraluminal fluid secretion.
