Polyvinylpyrrolidone 40,000 MW is a synthetic polymer consisting of linear 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone groups with an average molecular weight of 40,000 and is characterized by its viscosity in aqueous solution, expressed as K value. It is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing as well in plant and embryo tissue culture as a solubilizer and complexing agent.

Solubility
Soluble in water (>100mg/ml), methanol, ethanol, alcohol, chloroform and glycerol, acetic acid; insoluble in dimethyl ether, ethyl acetate, acetone, toluene, xylene, mineral oil, carbon tetrachloride. If the pH value of the solutions is higher than 6, the viscosity will increase slightly on storage, particularly at elevated temperatures; if the pH value is less than 7 and the concentration is lower than 30%, the solutions tend to become moldy during storage. The addition of a preservative can prevent mold and fungus growth during storage. Addition of large quantities of salts will precipitate the PVP from solution.
Storage and Stability
Store at RT under inert atmosphere. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial prior to removing the cap.
