Crospovidone is a polymer that is used in the production of tablets and capsules. It is a water-soluble polyvinylpyrrolidone, which is obtained by the condensation of vinyl acetate with pyrrolidine. Crospovidone has been shown to have toxicological properties in vitro, but not in vivo. In vitro studies have demonstrated that crospovidone has no effect on cell lysis or human serum. It also does not inhibit dapagliflozin, an inhibitor of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), which is a therapeutic target for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Crospovidone has been shown to be effective as a tablet binder in combination with other polymers such as carbopol and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC).
